Learning objectives

After our the initial meeting and your tutorials at the end of next week, you will have:

  • Familiarized yourself with the Library and Library Services available to you
  • Engaged in the process of formulating research questions
  • Learned the differences between different types of research outputs, including:
    • literature reviews
    • systematic reviews
    • meta-analyses
  • Learned how to take your research question and find supporting literature that address the question.

Pre-reading/assignments

Please familiarize yourself with the SFU Library website.  

Make sure you have a general understanding of:

Come prepared to ask any questions you may have about Library services.  Questions about the Research Commons are best directed here:  research-commons@sfu.ca.  

If you aren't already, now is a good time to consider using Reference Citation Management Software.  The SFU Library provides a comparison chart of various programs you can consider. 

Health Sciences Information Resources Research Guide

Have a look at the SFU Library's Health Sciences Information Resources Research Guide.  This can be the starting point for much of your research. 

National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools' Learning Centre

Create an account with the National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools' Learning Centre.

Learning Module: Searching for Research Evidence in Public Health

  • Begin the Learning Module "Searching for Research Evidence in Public Health."  
  • You will have to be logged into the site to get into the module.  
  • Complete the Module Overview, and the first part of Module Main, "Formulate a Question."

Develop a research question

  • Reflect on your LOI and/or the research interests you declared when applying for the MPH program.  
  • From these, develop a research question based on what you learned in the NCCMT Module.  
  • Use the PICO worksheet here.

Discuss your research question with the group

Come to our first class prepared to discuss your Research Question with the group.
