Scenario 1: You wake up and realize you're late for class. In your hurry out the door, you forget your laptop at home. You're in luck – you can just stop by the library and borrow one!
TRUE. There are lots of things you can borrow besides books. You can borrow laptops, phone chargers, headphones, calculators, laptop locks, and more!
Scenario 2: You're wandering around the stacks in the library and you just can't seem to find any books on your topic. Your only option is to google it.
FALSE. There are many ways for you to get help with your research at the library. Come talk to the friendly staff at the Research Help desk on the main floor. Or chat with a librarian online using AskAway. You can also text, call or email us!
Scenario 3: Your instructor recommends a book you can use for your essay topic. You've tried the library catalog but can't find the book. Your only option is to buy a copy online.
FALSE. The library has (literally) millions of resources, including books, e-books, journals and databases. If the library doesn't have the book or article you're looking for, you can request the item by Interlibrary Loan – which means we'll get you a copy from another library.
Scenario 4: It's lunch time, you're starving, and you just want a place you can sit down and eat. The nearby cafeterias are all full. No worries – you can eat in the library.
TRUE. You're allowed to eat in most places in the library except designated "no eating" areas. In order to ensure a welcoming environment, please eat without disturbing others or damaging library materials or equipment.
Scenario 5: You're looking for a novel by Douglas Coupland. You can find it in the library by going to the "C" section and locating the book by the author's last name.
FALSE. Books are organized by call number which means they are grouped by subject. For example, the math books will be located in the QA section. To find a particular book, search for it at www.lib.sfu.ca, write down its call number, and follow the library signage to find the item in the stacks!
Scenario 6: You're studying for final exams. You're a night owl and like to study late into the night. The library is open 24/7 during exams, so you can hang out there!
TRUE. At the end of each semester, Bennett Library is open 24/7 to provide a safe and welcoming place to complete assignments and study for exams. There is no research help overnight, but Security will be in the building all night to ensure safety. Stay tuned for information about when 24/7 opening starts this semester!
