About the workshop
Come to this in-person workshop to learn how to turn your spatial data into physical maps, with the wonder of 3D printing! In this workshop, we will be turning LiDAR-derived data layers, like Digital Elevation Models, from files on your computer into physical objects that we can touch and feel. In collaboration with the SFU Library Media and Maker Commons, you will be able to create and bring home your own 3D printed maps, as well as learn how to make more for the future!
Here are some examples to demonstrate what is possible with these methods.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Use open-source GIS software to create 3D maps, and export into files that can be 3D printed
- Learn the basics on how to import 3D files and manipulate them in 3D Printer slicer software
- Learn how to use 3D printers at the SFU Media and Maker Commons
- Take home your own 3D printed maps!
Target Audience
This workshop is designed for those with previous experience with QGIS software and generally comfortable with basic GIS skills. This workshop requires no experience in 3D printing.
